ONE BROOKLYN FUND INC. DISTRIBUTES MORE THAN 24,000 POUNDS OF TURKEYS AND VEGETABLES TO BROOKLYNITES IN NEED THIS THANKSGIVING
BROOKLYN, NY,—November 21, 2018: Today, One Brooklyn Fund Inc. (OBFI), in partnership with the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, celebrated more than 24,000 pounds of food — including more than 1,500 turkeys weighing more than 21,000 pounds as well as 2,600 pounds of vegetables — that have been donated to more than 100 local food pantries and houses of worship that are serving Brooklynites in need this Thanksgiving. Distributions were organized at Brooklyn Borough Hall in Downtown Brooklyn, Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Marine Park, and Plaza Auto Mall in Midwood. One Brooklyn Fund Inc. Executive Director Lori Luis gave thanks to the sponsors and volunteers who made this distribution possible, and spoke to the spirit of unity in giving back during the holiday season.
“In the spirit of Thanksgiving, One Brooklyn Fund is proud to support Brooklyn’s communities in need,” said OBFI Executive Director Luis. “We thank all of our sponsors that made this turkey and vegetable distribution possible. It will undoubtedly go a long way to providing Brooklynites with a warm meal this holiday season.”
Organizations that sponsored this community-driven Thanksgiving distribution included Brooklyn Roasting Company, BSE Global, Kings Plaza Shopping Center, National Grid, Omni New York LLC, Plaza Auto Mall, Radio 103.9, Shelter Rock Builders, Shop Rite, and Target. Additional volunteer support was provided by the Bedford-Stuyvesant Lions Club, HELP USA, and Masbia.
“Thanksgiving is about coming together with not just your family and friends but your community as well, and ensuring nobody goes hungry in this season of giving,” said State Senator Roxanne Persaud. “I appreciate the efforts of Plaza Auto Mall and the other organizations and individuals involved who donated to our Thanksgiving turkey community drive. I encourage all the members of our community to lend a helping hand going forward.”
“I am delighted to once again participate in lending a helping hand to the families of this community, through our annual turkey give-away event in partnership with the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President and Plaza Auto Mall,” said Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte. “Last year, hundreds of meals were passed out to underserved families for the Thanksgiving holiday. This year we look forward to making this event even more impactful.”
“I am pleased to join Plaza Auto Mall and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President in distributing free turkeys out to our community,” said Council Member Mathieu Eugene. “As Thanksgiving nears, we take this time as New Yorkers and Americans to reflect on how fortunate and blessed we are to have the companionship and support of our loved ones and to be able to cherish all of the treasures that life provides us. Let us welcome into our hearts and minds those families and individuals in our society who are less fortunate and provide them with our full support and generosity.”
“I want to thank Plaza Auto Mall for making this possible and helping to brighten the Thanksgiving for people in our community,” said Council Member Jumaane D. Williams. “I am always proud to be a part of this annual tradition. For too many, the holidays provide added difficulties and financial burden, and being able to help alleviate that in any way and bring joy to people in our community is gratifying.”
“Brooklyn Roasting Company is proud to support this year’s Thanksgiving turkey distribution,” said Michael Pollack, co-founder of Brooklyn Roasting Company (BRC). “BRC celebrates the strong local character of Brooklyn!”
